The largest all American battle during the Revolution took place on this day when patriot forces routed a loyalist regiment at Kings Mountain in South Carolina. 900 Americans defeated 1100 loyalists, killing or wounding half and capturing the rest. The surprise victory reversed British momentum in the south and influenced Lord Cornwallis’ decision to fall back to Virginia.
